"Learning the basics of Sony Vegas Pro 8: Basic Interface"

Let's get started....shall we?

Alright.
In the series of "Learning the basics of Sony Vegas Pro 8...",

We will now move on to:
"Learning the basics of Sony Vegas Pro 8: Importing Media",
...that is, of course, if you have managed to keep up with us ;)

In this guide, I will explain how to import media.

"Media" refers to all of your video project files:
such as video, audio, text, images, etc.

The image provided above shows you four ways you can import your media.
Another method, which is not shown in the image, is by dragging a file from a folder, and dropping it into the timeline.

We will first start off by explaining the "Project Media" tab.
This tab shows all of your imported media and plays a vital role when it comes to making videos.

With this tab, you can import, preview, view and change file properties, and add effects.
You can also choose to arrange your media, remove unwanted files, replace files,
and change the Project Media's window appearance.

Remove all unused media from project, removes all media that has not been placed on a timeline.

For example:
You have a media-generated text that was once in your timeline, but deleted it in place for something else. Since that text file is not in the timeline, it will be shown as an "unused media file" and will be deleted.

Import media, allows you to import files.

Capture video, allows you to import video from a camera and adds it to the Project Media window.

Extract Audio from CD allows you to basically copy any audio from a CD to your computer.

Get media from web opens up a window that takes you to an online store (from Sony).
Here, you can buy tons of presets, sound effects, etc.

Remove selected media from project allows you to select multiple media files and delete them with one click of a button.
To select multiple files, you must hold down the ctrl key on your keyboard and select the files you want to delete.

Media Properties allows you to view and make changes to a media file.

Media FX allows you to add effects to the selected media.
Doing this changes the media within the Project Media window, but does not affect the media in the timeline.

Start, Stop, and auto preview allow you to preview your media.
Start and Stop preview works just like the tools on the preview box.
Start preview plays the selected clip,
Stop preview stops the current clip being previewed.
Auto preview, when selected, automatically previews a media file when you click it.

Views allows you to change the appearence of the project media window.

There are three options:

Search Media Bins allows you to find certain media files.
This is really helpful when you have a numerous amount of files.

For example:
Let's say we have a file named "guitar11".
Click on the "Search media bins" icon, and type in "guitar".

Clicking search will create a new sub-category in the Project media tab,
and will show all of the files that have the word "guitar" in them.

----------

Now that you know what the Project Media tab is for, you will learn how to import your media.
This brings us back to this image...

We'll start off by learning how to import media by using the "File" tab (Highlighted in Green).

To import files using the "File" tab, you want to click on it.
By doing so, you should see options such as "New", "Open", "Close", and a bunch of other options.
You should also notice an option that says "Import" with an arrow.

By clicking on "import", you will then get a window similar to this:

Select "Media...", and it will then open another window.
Here, you will be able to find and import your files from your computer (allowing you to search your desktop/documents/etc.)

You can import files using the "Explorer" tab, which can be located just above the timeline (Highlighted in Red)

By right clicking on the timeline, you will see a list of options (Highlighted in Blue).
By selecting "Open...", it will open a window, allowing you to search for your file(s).
Doing so, the imported files will appear in the timeline and project media tab.

As explained earlier, you can import files by using the Project Media tools. (Highlighted in Purple)
By selecting the Import media tool, it will open a window, allowing you to import your media.
Simple choose your file(s), and select "Open".

This method, known as "drag and drop", involves dragging files from a folder in your desktop/documents/etc.
and dropping them into Sony Vegas.

For this, you will need an easy-access folder.
Recommended to be in your desktop, but it's up to you.

Now, open the folder.

Next, you want to select the file(s) you want to import.

Drag the file(s) into the "Sony Vegas" icon on your taskbar.
To drag a file, you must click and hold the file. You will notice whilst doing this, the file(s) will "follow" your cursor until you let go.

When doing this, the method, the imported files will appear in the timeline.

Another method you can do, while using the same "Drag and Drop" method, is by drag and dropping the files into the timeline (in sony vegas). However, you must have both the folder and Sony vegas windows open at the same time. Same concept, different layout.

Congratulations!
You've now learned how to import media on Sony Vegas!
Next, you'll be learning the before and after results of using effects, and how to add them into your video!
